Once you can survive a rally, the next step is controlling it. These tips cover the habits that separate players who just react from players who decide where the rocket goes.
Almost every loss for a new player is a deflect fired too early. The airblast only catches the rocket inside a small box in front of you, and firing into empty air starts a cooldown that can leave you defenseless when the rocket actually arrives. Train yourself to wait. Let the rocket commit to its final approach, then deflect when it is right in your face. It feels late. It is correct.
Both put the rocket where you want, but they suit different moments.
A good habit: drag by default, flick when you spot a specific opening. Flicking on every deflect makes your returns wild and easy to dodge.
When you deflect, you are choosing who gets hunted next. Aim at the player least ready to deal with it: someone airborne, someone facing the wrong way, someone who just used a movement ability and is committed to a direction. In team modes, focus the opponent who is isolated from their teammates. The rocket does the work; you just point it at the weakest read.
Rallies escalate, so the longer one runs the less time you get. When the rocket is screaming:
Every arena plays differently. Open arenas reward positioning and give you long sightlines to read the rocket. Tighter arenas with walls and cover let the rocket bounce around corners, so deflects can come from unexpected angles. Learn which surfaces bounce and use them: a deflect aimed at a wall can wrap around and hit someone who never saw the line. On vertical arenas, jumps and movement abilities open escape routes that flat arenas do not. Spend a few rounds on each map learning its quirks before you blame the rocket.
On the Modern rocket class you bring a loadout: a primary deflect style and a secondary ability. Modern already has a double jump built in, and a clean deflect refunds it, so you can stay airborne by keeping your deflects clean. The secondary slot is where the options live: a jetpack for sustained flight, a dash or teleport to reposition, a bunt to juggle the rocket, low-gravity boots, and more. They do more than get you out of trouble. A jetpack lifts you over a rocket skimming the floor or breaks a target lock; a dash repositions you for a cleaner deflect. Do not burn them randomly. Save the ability for the moment a clean deflect needs you somewhere you are not.
